Thermo-Modification is a newer concept used for many different lumber projects.
The process is done over a span of multiple days using Heat & Steam inside a Kiln. This process "cooks" the lumber from the inside out thus removing most of the pores & bringing the Wood back to its "Natural State"
Because the pores have been sealed there is little to no room for other Natural Wood rotting agents to dwell. This lengthens the life, enhances the grain & tonal qualties, prevents swelling, shrinking, bowing.
In Depth: Thermo-Modification works primarily on the supporting material within the cells walls, also known as hemicellulose.
By slowly heating the wood for a number of hours, with the absence of oxygen; the hemicellulose will lessen and majority of the mositure will be forced out of the wood.
Creating a stronger bond between the wood cells themselves.
With minimal loss of Strength or Structure
From the replacement of hydrogen bonds with covalent bonds
Moisture Content Decreases-
Thermo-Modified Wood is less susceptible to swelling and shrinking, due to the loss of hydrogen bonds during the treatment process
Due to the lack of moisture within the wood, the damping or "internal frictions" of which the speed of vibration returns to zero is lower than that of untreated lumber.
